As the viewer’s gaze travels from one work to the next, a theme begins to emerge. On the one hand, one sees courtly ladies in various poses and situations, usually a romantic one illustrating the poetry that so often appears either on the front of the painting of on the reverse. On the other hand, nobles, usually kinds, appear to be hunting, or lounging, or simply posing. Hence, we came upon our title for this catalogue – "Courtesans and Kings". Shawn Ghassemi
